Description
The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the biggest and most striking birds in the forest. About the size of a crow, black with bold white stripes down the neck and a flaming-red crest.Pileated Woodpeckers whack away at dead trees and fallen logs with their large bill in search of their main prey, carpenter ants, leaving unique rectangular holes in the wood. This one was seen in the northwest corner of my home state of Connecticut.
